Abstract
The paper addresses the challenges in the emerging field of microalgae biorefineries by adopting a methodology for simultaneous screening of processing paths and product portfolios. The approach follows the combinatorial use of a superstructure design and an optimization model to establish feasible and profitable solutions. For the synthesis stage, feedstocks, intermediates, products and processes are connected to form the possible options. The production of specialty chemicals from microalga Dunaliella is employed as a case study and the selected paths deriving from the execution of the optimization model are presented.
